Is Green the New Black?
Environment-friendly fashion trends are now making their way through runway shows and fashion magazines. As an effort to combat the effects of global warming, several designers have created innovative clothing wear and fashion accessories that use organic materials or recycled goods. If you think fashion has no conscience, here are just some of the green trends that continue to spread across the fashion world:
Bamboo Fiber Clothes
Nowadays, you don’t have to go for an all-silk ensemble to achieve a chic yet comfortable outfit. Organic materials such as bamboo fiber are becoming popular because of their flexibility as a fabric material with an earthy conscience. Plus, they say that bamboo fiber feels like silk. So if you want to to achieve a more nature-friendly ensemble, opt for clothing wear that’s made of bamboo fiber.
Re-purposed Clothes
Re-purposed clothes are those that are made of ripped-off old clothes gathered from the likes of the Salvation Army or Goodwill. Old clothes from these establishments are ripped off into pieces to be re-fashioned into “new” clothing items. To re-purpose clothes is to literally recycle old clothes.
Clothes Made of Recycled Materials
Dare to wear a belt adorned with old soda bottle caps? How about a pair of earrings made of keypad buttons from an old cellphone? These are just some of the ways several designers are turning junk items into usable fashion accessories.
Green Fashion as Business Trends
The rising popularity of these green fashion items are slowly shaping business trends. As a result, more and more innovative fashion designers are starting to sell clothes and accessories made of organic or recycled materials. Some of these designers are also focusing on producing fashion goods that are made within socially-conscious environments — no to sweatshops or conflict diamonds.
Patagonia, a clothing company known for its eco-friendly products, sell fleeces and clothing lines made from organic hemp, cotton, and recycled plastics. A percentage of Patagonia’s sales are also donated to Planet Fund. Another example is Wal-Mart, which is now also offering baby wear made from organic materials.
